OUBLIER L'HOMME, COMPRENDRE LA VIE
Pour expliquer le chemin qui va du gène au caractère phénotypique, le réductionnisme aboutit au schéma suivant : il existe des niveaux d'organisation de la matière et le vivant se construit en allant de la molécule vers l'organisme. Les molécules s'associent, les assemblages moléculaires forment les composants cellulaires, qui forment les cellules, qui forment les tissus, qui forment les organes, qui forment les organismes, et, la stéréospécificité permet à ce jeu de cubes de suivre le chemin tracé par le programme génétique. Cette stéréospécité est la capacité des molécules à se reconnaître comme il se doit pour construire l'espace. Ce schéma est, dans son fonctionnement et son résultat, identique à l'arbre de Porphyre.
Les concepts de l'ontologie d'Aristote, dans sa version réaliste, permettraient donc d'appréhender le vivant. Rien n'est moins sûr. La matière a le mauvais esprit de ne pas nous dire que nous sommes toujours les plus beaux. Les molécules n'en font qu'à leur tête. Elles sont totalement ubiquitaires et s'associent les unes avec les autres sans se soucier de la stéréospécité ou d'un plan préétabli. La vie émerge plutot d'une orgie généralisée que d'un défilé militaire.
D'ailleurs, la physique, pour se constituer à la Renaissance, a du s'émanciper de l'ontologie réaliste. Et si l'on veut bien se retourner un instant vers ce moment où elle s'est séparée de la biologie on pourra peut-être en comprendre la raison. Comment pourrait-on douter un instant de notre existence objective en tant qu'espèce ? Cela nous est évidemment impossible. Mais, est-il également impossible de construire une théorie rationnelle de la biologie sur la base de ce postulat insupportable ? Pierre Sonigo et moi-même avons lancé le pari avec Ni Dieu ni gène*.

To explain the path from gene to phenotype characteristic reductionism comes to the following pattern : there are different levels of organising matter and the living is built from molecule to organism. Molecules are associated, molecule assemblings form cell components, which form cells, which form tissues, which form organs, which form organisms. Stereospecificity allows this building blocks to follow the path drawn by genetic program. This stereospecificity is the molecules' ability to recognise each other to build species. This scheme is identical to Porphyry's tree in its functioning and result.
Aristotle's ontologic concepts in their realist version should make it possible to apprehend the living. Nothing is less sure. Matter is unkind enough not to tell us that we are always the most handsome. Molecules do what they want. They are absolutely ubiquitous and associate with each other without paying any attention to stereospecificy nor to a pre-established plan. Life emerges from a general orgy more than from a military march.
When it appeared at the turn of the XVIth century physics had to emancipate itself from realist ontology. And if we turn to the moment when it was separated from biology we could understand why. How could we doubt even for a while of our objective existence as a species ? This is obviously impossible. But is it either impossible to build a rational theory of biology on the basis of this postulate that is so unbearable to us ? This is the challenge Pierre Sonigo and myself have tried to face in Neither God nor gene*.
